Practical: Is It Alive? Part 3

Three different types of liquids – water, glucose and salt water are also provided to test the reactions of the substance to these liquids.


Why were these liquids chosen?
 
Living things are made up of cells. Normal cells will diffuse if immersed in glucose water as the molecules of the glucose will pass through the cells' membranes since glucose is actually food. If they are immersed in water, the substance will diffuse faster and expand as the molecules of water are much smaller than glucose and they are less-concentrated so they can enter the membrane of cells more quickly. In salt water, concentration of salt in salt water is higher than substances in the cells so water from the cell will pass through the membrane to the salt water causing the cell to shrink due to lack of water. The liquids were probably chosen to test these reactions.
